History
The Town of New Castle dates from 1791 when it split off from the neighboring Town of North Castle. A rich heritage of houses, barns and stone walls dating from Revolutionary and older times is still evident throughout town. Chappaqua was an isolated country village until the middle of the 19th century, when it was experienced rapid growth from small factories that sprouted during the industrialization of that period. Since the early years of the 20th century, it has been one of the most affluent and attractive of tens of thousands of the nation's suburbs. Its school system is consistently ranked among the top secondary institutions in the country, and its per capita income has long been far above the national average. Until recently, its quiet roadways were almost devoid of apartments of any kind, and its average home prices were among the highest in the continent.
Public Schools
The Chappaqua School District serves the hamlets of Chappaqua and Millwood, as well as small portions of Armonk, Pleasantville, Briarcliff Manor, Ossining and Mount Kisco. It has three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, from which more than 90% of graduates proceed on to college. Education is an essential priority in the community life of Chappaqua. The District spends more than $18,000 per student annually.
