Larchmont / Mamaroneck, NY

Larchmont & Mamaroneck Homes & Real Estate Larchmont & Mamaroneck Real Estate

The Town of Mamaroneck consists of the Unincorporated Area, the Village of Larchmont and the part of the Village of Mamaroneck lying west of the Mamaroneck River or that part that is not Rye Neck. Though both incorporated villages are self-governing, the unincorporated area and the villages constitute the Town as a political and governmental subdivision of the State. Larchmont and Mamaroneck are approximately 20 miles north of New York City.

Like its neighboring village of Larchmont, Mamaroneck was at one time the location of summer residences for wealthy families from New York City. Summer residence neighborhoods included Greenhaven, Orienta and Shore Acres. The local railroad from New York City (now Metro North), with continuing service to Connecticut, began to service the village in 1848. Currently the village of Mamaroneck is primarily a bedroom community for commuters to Manhattan. A major harbor on the Long Island Sound supports facilities for pleasure boating. The harbor also contains a large park with sporting facilities.

In July of 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Larchmont 11th on its list of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States.

Houses in Larchmont, N.Y., are among the most expensive in Westchester County. The median sales price of a single-family house there was $945,000 for 2004. As of October 31, 2006 - there were 139 real estate listings in the Westchester/Putnam MLS for Larchmont and Mamaroneck, ranging in asking price from $450,000 for a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home on .1 acre and $25,000,000 for a 6 bedroom home situation on 4 acres with 800 ft. of frontage on Long Island Sound.

History

The earliest known settlers in what is now the Village of Larchmont were an Algonquin tribe known as the Siwanoy Indians. They sustained themselves by harvesting the rich marshlands for clams and hunted inland for bear, deer, racoon and muskrat. In 1614, a Dutch sea captain passing through Long Island Sound reported seeing campfires in what is now known as Larchmont Manor Park. The indigenous population did not remain for long, once the British and Dutch began buying up the land. By 1720, only a handful of Siwanoys remained.

During the next century there was a steady increase in population, first from Quaker refugees from New England and then later wealthy New Yorkers established estates in the area. During the late 19th century, Larchmont was known as a summer getaway for New York's elite. Many of the large Victorian "cottages" of that era still exist in Larchmont Manor. Larchmont, which incorporated as a municipality in 1891, is a one-mile-square village within the Town of Mamaroneck, served by the New Haven line of Metro-North Railroad and several major highways.

Public Schools

The village of Larchmont contains one of the six schools in the Mamaroneck School District, Chatsworth Avenue School. Two of the other schools are in the Village of Mamaroneck, and the other three (two elementary schools and the middle school) are in the unincorporated Town of Mamaroneck.

Recreation & Culture

The Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Department provides a wide variety of leisure and cultural activities, special events, facilities and services that encourage health, fitness, relaxation, enjoyment, cultural enrichment and learning as well as providing opportunities for community involvement. Larchmont's recreational facilities are varied. The Olympic-size swimming pool at the Hommocks Middle School is open to residents at night and during vacations. Nearby are public tennis courts that are flooded in winter for ice skating. The Larchmont Soccer League provides Saturday sport for nearly 1,000 youngsters age 7 to 13 as well as more than 100 parents who serve as coaches.

Houses of Worship

Religious congregations in and around Larchmont and Mamaroneck include St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, Beth Emeth Synagogue, Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church, Larchmont Temple and St. John’s Episcopal Church.
