History
In 1685 Frederick Philipse purchased land from the Native American Sint Sincks, which would eventually become the Town of Ossining. The area constituted part of the Manor of Philipsburg but these lands were confiscated by New York State in 1779 because the last Lord of the Manor, Colonel Frederick Philipse, was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War. Many of the former tenants of the land bought their farms from the state.
The Town of Ossining was carved out of the Town of Mount Pleasant in 1845. The name comes from the Indian word for “a place of stones.” The town is comprised of the villages of Ossining and Briarcliff Manor, as well as an unincorporated area. In 1813 the Village of Sing Sing, now Ossining, became the first incorporated village in Westchester County. In 1901, local officials changed the name of the village to Ossining to avoid confusing goods made in the village with products produced in the Sing Sing prison that were at that time allowed to be sold on the open market.
Due to the history of the village, a number of Ossining structures are on the National Register of Historic Places, and the downtown shopping area has been deemed eligible for listing.
Public Schools
The Ossining Union Free School District contains five schools, including 3 elementary, 1 middle and 1 high school. There are several private schools in the area that serve residents of Ossining, as well.

Ossining is the only place where visitors may actually enter the aqueduct, through the Weir Chamber, used to spill off waste water during floods.
